About Me

Hello! My name is Sakeina Syed and I’m a freelance journalist based in Toronto. I’m interested in social issues, public policy, and culture.

My writing has been published in The New York Times, Teen Vogue, The Walrus, Vogue, The Globe and Mail, The Toronto Star, The Local, Maisonneuve, Slate, Refinery29, Chatelaine, VICE, Toronto Life, Quill & Quire, Stylist, Catapult, West End Phoenix, Spacing, and others. I have also appeared on NPR to discuss my writing.

I have completed fellowships with The Local and the Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA). I also interned at the University of Toronto’s Investigative Journalism Bureau, which publishes through the Toronto Star.

In 2020, I received the Amnesty International Canada Media Award for Post-Secondary Journalism. In 2023, I received the Canadian Association of Journalists (CAJ) Student Award of Excellence. I was also a finalist for Best Emerging Writer at the 2023 National Magazine Awards.
